Bootsy's Girl Goes A New Distance Wednesday

October 12, 2017

LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 12, 2017) – When Wednesday’s first race, scheduled at 11⁄2 miles on turf, was rained off Keeneland’s turf course and moved to the dirt track, the distance of the race was set at 1 5/8 miles. This marked the first time that distance has been run on the main track since Keeneland installed a new dirt surface in the summer of 2014.

The winner of the marathon, which began in the chute used for 41⁄2-furlong races for 2-year-olds during the Spring Meet, was Bootsy’s Girl, ridden by Channing Hill to a 41⁄2-length victory in 2:47.28. Trained by Luis Jurado, the 5-year-old daughter of Summer Bird races for William Helwig, John Kirkland, Jerry Markham, William Medley and James Bailey.

Keeneland’s dirt track was structurally reconfigured in the summer of 2006 to widen the turns and lengthen the stretch. As a result, dirt track records prior to the 2006 Fall Meet are not comparable to times set on the new dirt surface. A new set of track records was established during the 2014 Fall Meet.
