Today’s Churchill Downs Hot List races to watch – Friday, June 28, 2013

By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch                  B: Secondary horse to watch

*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd

*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse

* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

3rd race – (7) Racing Widly (a C last time) dropped from 2-1 to 6-5 and broke her maiden convincingly. There’s plenty of speed here and she can work out a beneficial stalking trip from the outside post. (6) Victoria’s Vision was a front-running maiden winner and looms a major threat against these. (4) Quixote’s Lady drops off a claim by Maker and cannot be ignored. (1) Are We There Yet posted a 38-1 upset last time and can sneak into the picture again.  Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-6-7.

6th race – (1) Beer Garden (C) took a late hit in dropping from 5-1 to 7-2 then ran into trouble at the start and had to settle for second. Was claimed by Maker and could atone in his first start for his new connections. (7) Paroled has a strong late kick but needs to get rolling sooner. (6) High Dollar Kitten showed unusual speed in finishing a narrowly beaten fourth. Can beat these on his best effort. (2) Formidable Heart also has a solid late kick and could figure in the exotics. Betting strategy:  1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-7. Doubles: 1-2-6-7 with 1-4-5-7 and 1-2-6-7-8-9 with 4.

7th race – (4) Separation  (C) dropped from 2-1 to 8-5 but rallied in the slower center of the track and wound up third. Drops in class and should handle these. (1) Going Gaga was second in her last two starts and could make it a hat trick. (7) Happy Holidays has been working steadily for her debut. (5) Natalya could be a runner at this level. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place.  Exacta box: 1-4-5-7.

9th race – (7) La Malaguena (D) took a big drop from 3-1 to 3-2, then moved up on the backstretch into the teeth of quick fractions but tired. Cuts back to six furlongs and could pull off a surprise while switching to apprentice rider Davis. (4) Silver Strike has a good turn of speed and will appreciate a switch to dirt. (1) In Step Dancer has the rail after finishing second at this level. (9) C P Hath a Way could grab a share while moving from turf to a dirt sprint. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-7-9.

11th race – (12) Posse Attack (A) has been away nearly 3 months since an impressive neck loss in a claimer. Steps up to the MSW ranks here, but sharp recent works indicate he’s worth a long look here if he can draw in. (8) Delta Golf Alpha has the kind of speed to be dangerous in this mile event. (1) Frivolous has raced well enough on Polytrack to be a factor here on turf. (9) Grand Giant ships in from California and debuts for Maker; deserves inclusion in the exotics. Betting strategy: 12 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-8-9-12.
