Richard Williams, a member of the Keeneland maintenance department, was recently recognized as a local hero by the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Richard was one of twelve 2013 “Hero of the Year” nominees honored at the Campaign Recognition and Celebration Event held as part of the Heroes Campaign presented by Nurses Registry.
As chairperson for the Keeneland blood drive, Richard works closely with the Kentucky Blood Center to provide a successful blood drive twice annually. He also arranges transportation and brings Keeneland staff to the Beaumont Donor Center two additional times each year to donate blood.
Since 1984, he has coordinated nearly 50 Keeneland blood drives, resulting in more than 1,900 life-saving blood donations. Through those drives, Keeneland’s staff has touched the lives of more than 4,000 Kentucky patients. As a regular donor he has rolled up his sleeve to donate 80 times, which puts his personal total at 10 gallons of lifesaving blood.
The Heroes Campaign is a community awareness and fundraising campaign that seeks to recognize those individuals who are making a difference in the Lexington community.
