LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 29, 2014) – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year’s Day and champion She’s a Tiger, who both were sold at the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, were assigned high weights in the male and filly divisions, respectively, of The Jockey Club’s 2013 Experimental Free Handicap, announced today by The Jockey Club.

Keeneland sale graduates are among the top-weighted juveniles in both divisions of the Experimental. Published annually since 1935, the Experimental is a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypothetical race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

New Year’s Day, who received the high weight of 126 pounds, won two races in three starts and earned $1,154,000 in 2013. At the September Sale, Ben Glass purchased the Street Cry (IRE) colt for owners Gary and Mary West for $425,000 from breeder Clearsky Farms, agent.

Other top-weighted Keeneland sales graduates are Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) runner-up Giovanni Boldini and Hopeful (G1) winner Strong Mandate, both assigned 122 pounds; FrontRunner (G1) winner Bond Holder at 119 pounds; and Best Pal (G2) winner Alberts Hope and Nashua (G2) winner Cairo Prince at 118 pounds apiece. On Saturday, Cairo Prince won the Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream by 5¾ lengths.

Keeneland September Sale graduate She’s a Tiger, winner of the 2013 Del Mar Debutante (G1) and runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), was co-high-weighted at 123 pounds in the filly division. Warrendale Sales, agent, consigned the Tale of the Cat filly to the September Sale, where she was purchased for $150,000 by Mersad Metanovic Bloodstock. She’s a Tiger, who won three races in six starts and earned $725,650 last year, is owned by the partnership of Mark Dedomenico, Allen Aldrich, Lisa Hernandez, Stuart Downey and Phil Lebherz.

Keeneland sales graduates account for these other high-weighted fillies: Darley Alcibiades (G1) winner My Conquestadory and Spinaway (G1) winner Sweet Reason, each at 120 pounds;  Demoiselle (G2) winner Stopchargingmaria at 119 pounds; and Fascinating, second to She’s a Tiger in the Del Mar Debutante, at 117 pounds.
