Keeneland is currently seeking a part time seasonal Assistant Horseman’s Bookkeeper is required to help carry out the provisions of the Kentucky Revised Statues and Keeneland Association’s policies regarding the fees, purses and claiming races during Keeneland’s live race meets and to act as a Record Keeper and a Banker for the Horseman's Racing Account.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Receives funds that will be credited to horsemen’s racing accounts for the purposes of claiming, stakes nominations and jockey fees;
Certifies to the claims clerk in the Racing Office that the horseman has adequate funds in their racing account to cover the amount of the claim;
Verify that the account is exactly listed as on the claims slip;
Review Stakes races and that all information is correct for the horsemen with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
Prepares race day scale sheets;
Approves Horseman's checks for cashing by the track and prepares the Horseman's check requests as well:
Collects entry fees, nomination fees, jockey mount fees and claim deposits;
Verifies account balances deposited for horse claiming purposes;
Provides account status to horseman from phone requests or in person;
Liaison between the Horsemen’s Bookkepper and owners, trainers and jockeys with horseman’s account;
Attempts to collect bad checks;
Assist the Bookkeeper to assure that all proper account documention; i.e., W-9's, correct addresses, and other information is correct and current for the horsemen’s account.
Verifies receipt of wires;
Possesses good general phone skills along with a good general knowledge of the thoroughbred horse racing business; and,
Guides all dealings with the public in a professional manner.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. .Accounting or banking background a plus.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
