Named for the beloved mountainous region that includes Eastern Kentucky, the Appalachian debuted in 1989 as a 1 1/16-mile race on turf. The distance of the race became one mile in 1996.
The $125,000 Appalachian (G3) is for 3-year-old fillies, going 1 mile on turf. The nomination fee is $100; nominations close March 29.
Keeneland sales graduate Catch a Glimpse, winner of the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) here, returned to Keeneland to win the Appalachian (G3) and trained here through early July. She was voted Canada's 2015 Horse of the Year:
