The race is named for Madison County, the largest county in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Established in 1786, the county was named for James Madison, who later became the fourth President of the United States. The county seat is Richmond, home of Eastern Kentucky University.
The $300,000 Madison (G1) is for 4-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, going 7 furlongs on the main track. The nomination fee is $150; nominations close March 22.
