Purses also rise for Woodford (G3) and Bourbon (G3) Stakes

Keeneland, in partnership with Shadwell Farm, announced today that the purse for the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) will be increased to $750,000 for its 27th running on FallStars Saturday, October 6.

The fall race meeting, to be held October 5-27, will feature 17 stakes with purse money totaling $4.5 million. The Shadwell Turf Mile is one of six Grade 1 stakes, the others being the Darley Alcibiades, Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity, First Lady, Juddmonte Spinster and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, among the 15 graded races featured this fall.

“We are very excited, in partnership with Keeneland, to further enhance the status of the Shadwell Turf Mile, and to secure its position as one of the country’s most prestigious grass races,” said Rick Nichols, vice president and general manager of Shadwell Farm, which has sponsored the race since 1999.

The purse increase for the Shadwell Turf Mile marks a $150,000 boost from last year’s purse of $600,000, ranking it alongside the spring meeting’s $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass (G1) as Keeneland’s most valuable stakes in terms of prize money. Champion Gio Ponti won the previous two runnings of the Shadwell Turf Mile, which is held for three-year-olds and up.

“Shadwell Farm is an invaluable member of the Keeneland family, and we greatly appreciate their strong commitment to Thoroughbred racing,” said Keeneland Vice President of Racing W. B. Rogers Beasley. “The Shadwell Turf Mile is a centerpiece of FallStars Weekend, and this purse increase assures it will continue to attract the nation’s top turf horses.”

Nine graded stakes worth more than $3 million highlight Keeneland’s opening FallStars Weekend. Purses for two other FallStars stakes – the Woodford (G3) and the Bourbon (G3) – have each been increased by $50,000 to $150,000.

Seven FallStars stakes comprise part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series of automatic qualifying races for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships to be held November 2-3 at Santa Anita Park. This fall’s roster expands to include the aforementioned Bourbon, a Challenge race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). Other Breeders’ Cup Challenge races held FallStars Weekend are the Darley Alcibiades-G1(Juvenile Fillies-G1) and Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix-G3 (Sprint-G1) on October 5; the Shadwell Turf Mile-G1 (Mile-G1), Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity-G1 (Juvenile-G1) and Thoroughbred Club of America-G2 (Filly & Mare Sprint-G1) on October 6; and the Juddmonte Spinster-G1 (Ladies’ Classic-G1) on October 7.

The JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (G3), a Breeders’ Cup Challenge stakes for the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), is slated for October 11.

Keeneland’s Thoroughbred Club of America has produced consecutive winners of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint – Dubai Majesty in 2010 and champion Musical Romance in 2011. Other FallStars contenders to achieve recent success in the Breeders’ Cup are Stephanie’s Kitten, winner of the 2011 Darley Alcibiades (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), and Chamberlain Bridge, fourth in the 2010 Woodford and winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G2).
