About Fall Stars Weekend

Keeneland’s 2017 Fall Meet opens Friday, Oct. 6, with the start of Fall Stars Weekend, which features nine graded stakes worth a total $3.75 million over the first three days of the 17-day season. Five Fall Stars stakes are Grade 1 events: $400,000 Darley Alcibiades on Oct. 6; $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile, $500,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity and $400,000 First Lady on Oct. 7; and $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster on Oct. 8.

Breeders' Cup Connection

In October 2001, Keeneland debuted Fall Stars Weekend as a showcase for horses pointing to the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Eight stakes during the 2017 Fall Stars Weekend are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, which awards the winning horse a spot in the starting gate for the corresponding race during the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 3-4 at Del Mar. The races are the Darley Alcibiades, which sends the winner to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), and the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (TwinSpires Sprint-G1) on Oct. 6; Shadwell Turf Mile (Mile-G1), Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (Juvenile-G1), First Lady (Filly and Mare Turf-G1) and Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) (Filly and Mare Sprint-G1) on Oct. 7; and Juddmonte Spinster (Distaff-G1) and Dixiana Bourbon (G3) (Juvenile Turf-G1) on Oct. 8.

The Fall Meet has produced 42 horses that went on to win 45 Breeders' Cup races. Last year, Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Classic Empire captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and received the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male. Third in the 2017 Shadwell Turf Mile, next won the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Other Breeders' Cup winners who competed during Keeneland's Fall Meet include Keeneland-based Wise Dan, who romped to a 2¼-length win in the Shadwell Turf Mile as a prelude to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Horse of the Year honors. Three 2014 Breeders' Cup race winners ran their previous race during Keeneland's Fall Stars Weekend: Sprint winner Work All Week (Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix), Filly and Mare Turf winner Dayatthespa (First Lady) and Juvenile Fillies winner Take Charge Brandi (Darley Alcibiades). In 2015, the Breeders' Cup came to Keeneland and two Breeders' Cup race winners returned after winning stakes during the Fall Meet: Mile winner Tepin (First Lady) and Sprint winner Runhappy (Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix).
