The Alcibiades takes its name from the great foundation mare Alcibiades, who was owned by Hal Price Headley, one of Keeneland’s founders. More than a dozen stakes winners including Menow, Firm Policy, Salaminia, Lithe, Rash Statement, Secret Hello, Silent Account and Sir Ivor, descend from Alcibiades. Darley began sponsoring the race in 2003.
