March 12, 2018

Keeneland sales alumni AccelerateCity of Light and Bowies Hero established themselves among the nation’s top older horses with wins in each of the three Grade 1 stakes held on Big ‘Cap Day at Santa Anita on Saturday. Sales graduates also excelled on the world stage.  Mendelssohn and Gronkowski won classic preps in England and Ireland, respectively, to earn points on the 2018 European Road to the Kentucky Derby (G1), while HawkbillKimbear and Yulong Warrior captured stakes on Super Saturday at Meydan.

Accelerate remained undefeated in 2018 with a 5½-length win in the Santa Anita Handicap Presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino (G1) following his victory in the San Pasqual (G2) in February. City of Light, winner of the Malibu (G1) on Dec. 26, recorded back-to-back Grade 1 wins with a victory in his season debut, the Triple Bend (G1). Keeneland sales alumni finished 1-2-3, led by the highly regarded Bowies Hero, in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1).

Mendelssohn and Gronkowski rank 1-2 on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard after recent wins in the 32Red Patton (L) at Dundalk and Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes at Kempton Park, respectively. The victory in the Patton was Mendelssohn’s first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 3. One spot in the Derby starting gate is an invitation to the European point leaders.
