Wesley Ward Seeks Fourth Win In Queen Mary Saturday At Royal Ascot

June 15, 2020

Keeneland-based trainer Wesley Ward, who recorded two second-place finishes Friday at Royal Ascot, is represented by two entrants in Saturday’s Queen Mary (G2) on the final day of the prestigious five-day meet in England: Stonestreet Stables’ Campanelle (IRE)and Three Chimneys Farm’s Keeneland sales graduate Royal Approval

Ward, who has 10 wins at Royal Ascot, has three wins in the Queen Mary with Jealous Again(2009), Acapulco(2015) and European champion Lady Aurelia (2016). He sent seven horses to compete at Royal Ascot this year but did not travel there because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

On Thursday, Ward’s runner-ups were Ten Broeck Farm’s Kimari in the Commonwealth Cup (G1) and Ranlo Investments’ Golden Palin the Norfolk (G2). His Saturday entrants in the 5-furlong Queen Mary both have been based in South Florida, where they opened their careers at Gulfstream Park in the same 5-furlong turf race on May 31. Campanelle, the second choice behind Royal Approval, defeated her stablemate by 3½ lengths.

Frankie Detttori will ride Campanelle, who was bred by Tally-Ho Stud, in the Queen Mary.

Royal Approval, a daughter of Tiznow bred by Three Chimneys, was offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, at the 2019 September Yearling Sale. Silvestre De Sousa will ride the filly in the Queen Mary.
