Quotes - $150,000 Bourbon (G3)

Chad Brown (winning trainer of Balance the Books)

“He’s a wonderful horse, wonderful owners – Seth Klarman and Bill Lawrence. All three of this horse’s races have been good. (He is a) Keeneland sales grad (purchased for $160,000 at the Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale); got him here in the spring and brought him back here and won a stakes. It’s been great.

“This horse is getting bigger and stronger, and it’s on to the Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Turf [G1])”

WISE DAN EXITS SHADWELL VICTORY IN FINE FORM

Wise Dan Wins Shadwell Turf Mile

Wise Dan Wins Shadwell Turf Mile; Joha and Tapitsfly Post Grade 1 Wins; Groupie Doll Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth with Thoroughbred Club of America Triumph; Bridgetown Takes Woodford

LEXINGTON, KY (October 6, 2012) – Morton Fink’s homebred Wise Dan cruised to the lead leaving the far turn and coasted to a 2¼-length victory over Willcox Inn to win the 27th running of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1), the centerpiece of a five-stakes program before a crowd of 22,292 on a bright fall afternoon at Keeneland.

Quotes - $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1)

Charlie Lopresti (winning trainer of Wise Dan)

“He’s good. He’s really good. He was so good coming out of the Woodbine race (Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile on September 16 that) I just didn’t want to breeze him too many more times. I figured this (racing in the Shadwell Turf Mile) would give him a chance to maybe breeze him one more time easy and then run him (in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships).

Quotes - $400,000 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (G1)

Mike Maker (winning trainer of Joha)

“It was a tough beat last time (finishing second by a head to Balance the Books in the With Anticipation (G2) on turf at Saratoga on August 30), but I’m grateful for today.”

On whether the plan was to take the early lead

“I don’t think we really had an option. He was going to be forwardly placed no matter what post position he drew. But from the one hole, it kind of made it a no-brainer.”

Rajiv Maragh (winning jockey)

Quotes - $350,000 First Lady (G1)

Dale Romans (winning trainer of Tapitsfly)

“She has been a special filly. She’s probably going to retire at the end of this year. She’s going to have one or two more starts left so we’ve got to pick some place that’s going to count. The Breeders’ Cup is tough because for the fillies, she has to run so far (1 1/4 miles in the Grade 1 Filly & Mare Turf) unless we decide to put her in against the colts (in the Grade 1 Mile). But we’ve done sillier things.”

Jose Lezcano (winning jockey)

Quotes - $200,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (G2)

Buff Bradley (winning trainer of Groupie Doll)

“We know she’s right right now. She’s been training well up to the race. After she came out of the Presque Isle (Downs Masters Stakes, a Grade 2 race on September 8 in her last start), I really felt good. She came into form again. Sometimes when you give them time off like that you don’t know if they’re going to come back as strong. But she sure has.”

On winning a race like this at Keeneland and going to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) as the favorite

Quotes - $150,000 Woodford (G3)

Michael Dilger (assistant to Todd Pletcher, trainer of winner Bridgetown)

“A race this short we thought Javier (Castellano) could do whatever he thought best. He knows the horse well; he’s ridden him plenty of times before. I think he rode a great race.”

Javier Castellano (winning jockey)
