Keeneland Connections Spotlight: Kentucky Derby Contenders

The five grade 1 prep races for the 138th Kentucky Derby were won by five different horses—Dullahan in the Toyota Bluegrass, Take Charge Indy in the Florida Derby, I’ll Have Another in the Santa Anita Derby, Gemologist in the Wood Memorial and Bodemeister in the Arkansas Derby. But there is one common thread for that group—all five were sold at Keeneland.

Dullahan, Bodemeister, Take Charge Indy and I’ll Have Another all were offered at the September sale while Gemologist was purchased at the 2009 November Breeding Stock Sale as a weanling.

Mark Valeski Captures Peter Pan, Drill Wins Laz Barrera

Keeneland sales grads swept the weekend’s two graded stakes for three-year-olds. Mark Valeski won Belmont’s Peter Pan Stakes (G2) for owner Brereton Jones, trainer Larry Jones and jockey Rosie Napravnik. Only a half-length separated first- and second-place finishers and Keeneland sales alumni Drill and American Act in the Lazaro S. Barrera Memorial (G3) at Hollywood.

Keeneland Connection Spotlight: Dullahan

Emilie Fojan says working around horses enables one to identify the ones that have a special quality and early on, she told Dullahan’s breeder, Phil Needham, that his colt had that kind of presence about him.

“I have really fond memories of him,” Fojan added. “I always told Phil that he was a special horse and I said ‘if this horse doesn’t win the Derby, I’ll eat my foot’. He had an extremely good mind, very professional. He was just the coolest horse.”
