Keeneland Sales Graduates Headline Derby, Oaks Fields

Twelve of the first 25 leading point earners on the Road to the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 7 and 10 of the 20 fillies bidding to race in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 6 are graduates of Keeneland sales.

The Derby hopefuls (listed in order of points earned) are Nyquist, Exaggerator, Brody's Cause, Creator, Mohaymen, Destin, Suddenbreakingnews, Tom’s Ready, Majesto, Mo Tom, Laoban and Dazzling Gem.

Keeneland Sales Graduates Honored by Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders

Keeneland and five of its sales graduates were honored at the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Annual Kentucky-Bred Champions Awards Presentation here on Thursday. The event also recognized other successful members of the state’s Thoroughbred industry.

Keeneland sales alumni who were recognized were Air Force Blue (racing abroad), Beholder (older dirt female), I’m a Chatterbox (3-year-old filly), Nyquist (2-year-old male) and Runhappy (sprinter).

Old Friend Checks on Nyquist at Keeneland

Dennis Fenton probably has known Reddam Racing’s Nyquist longer than anybody. 

Fenton works for Gerry Dilger’s Dromoland Farm near Lexington and handled Nyquist for about a year beginning late in the colt’s weanling year through most of his yearling year. At Keeneland’s 2013 November Breeding Stock Sale, the weanling Nyquist was purchased for $180,000 by Madison Farm and took up residence at Dromoland. 

Consigned to Keeneland’s 2014 September Yearling Sale, he sold for $230,000 to Sutton Place Stables.
