Silver Max Upsets Wise Dan to Win Shadwell Turf Mile and Earn Breeders’ Cup Berth

LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 5, 2013) -- Mark Bacon and Dana Wells’ Silver Max turned back the challenge of 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan at the top of the stretch to win the 28th running of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) by 1 ¼ lengths.

Because of heavy rain earlier in the afternoon, the race was taken off the turf course and run at 1 1/16 miles on the main track. More than 1½ inches of rain fell in the Keeneland area in a two-hour span after the storms began after 4 p.m.

On Silver Max’s improved form in the past year

“He had management issues. I threw him to the wolves probably a little quicker than I should have, but we backed up and regrouped and he’s strong this fall. We had a tired horse last fall – this fall we’re just peaking.”

LEXINGTON, KY (October 6, 2012) – Morton Fink’s homebred Wise Dan cruised to the lead leaving the far turn and coasted to a 2¼-length victory over Willcox Inn to win the 27th running of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1), the centerpiece of a five-stakes program before a crowd of 22,292 on a bright fall afternoon at Keeneland.

Quotes - $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1)

Charlie Lopresti (winning trainer of Wise Dan)

“He’s good. He’s really good. He was so good coming out of the Woodbine race (Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile on September 16 that) I just didn’t want to breeze him too many more times. I figured this (racing in the Shadwell Turf Mile) would give him a chance to maybe breeze him one more time easy and then run him (in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships).

Soaring to Success

Prestigious Shadwell Turf Mile features higher purse, unique trophy

Winning a Grade 1 stakes race at a track like Keeneland is a special accomplishment for any owner. But the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) on October 6 offers two other enticing elements.

First, the purse has been raised to $750,000 – highest of any race on the Fall Stars Weekend lineup and equal to the spring meet’s signature event, the Toyota Blue Grass (G1). And beyond the added cash is a unique keepsake to mark the achievement for the winning owner.
