Medal Count Rides the Rail to Victory in Opening-Day Transylvania

LEXINGTON, KY (April 4, 2014) – Spendthrift Farm’s Medal Count, under a rail-skimming ride from Robby Albarado, rallied for a 1¼-length victory over Picozza to win the 26th running of the $100,000 Transylvania for 3-year-olds before an opening-day crowd of 15,169 at Keeneland on a breezy Friday afternoon.

Trained by Dale Romans, Medal Count covered the 1 1/16 miles on the main track in 1:43.35. The race was moved off the turf course because of overnight and morning rain. As a result, the race was downgraded pending review by the Graded Stakes Committee.

Quotes from the $100,000 Transylvania

Dale Romans (winning trainer of Medal Count)

“He is versatile. He ran well on the Polytrack here in the fall (when finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Bourbon on Oct. 6, 2013), but he just had too much trouble (in the race). This is a really good horse. He’s been one of my favorites all along. He’s a good horse, and he showed the performance we were expecting.”

Whit Beckman (assistant to Todd Pletcher, winning trainer of Jack Milton)

“He’s been training in Florida and they liked what they saw in his works. He’s been a horse that’s shown talent on the grass. He’s improved a lot since his first and second starts.

“He was green making the lead. Johnny (Velazquez) got perfect position. He rated very professionally and when he was asked turning for home, he did just that.”

John Velazquez (winning rider of Jack Milton)
