Dave Kassen (winning trainer of Nikki’s Sandcastle)

On watching the race in which Nikki’s Sandcastle had trouble finding racing room

“I was thinking, ‘When’s he (jockey Leandro Goncalves) every going to be able to let him run? He just kept pulling him up the whole race practically, but it worked out good in the end.

“I knew he had a lot of horse, but usually when you strangle one that long, they just give it up on you. But he kept on – pretty good horse.”

Leandro Goncalves (winning rider)

“I was in traffic the whole way from the first turn. I had to check five or six times. I didn’t have anywhere to go. Turning for home, I was able to get him outside. I had so much horse, it worked out great, and he gave me a good kick.”

Joe Rocco Jr. (rider of runner-up Winning Cause)

“Around the first turn, I was going to get hung a little wide so I took a little hold, dropped in, was able to save ground. They were bunched up and it was a really compact field, so on the backside I opted to angle out a little bit and follow the 8 horse (Lea), who I thought was the horse to beat. My horse gave me a good kick down the lane. The 4 horse (Nikki’s Sandcastle) just ran us down.”

Byron Hughes (assistant to Todd Pletcher, trainer of Winning Cause)

“He ran very well. Joe (Rocco Jr.) put him in good position. He finished strong – just got outrun.”

Eddie Castro (rider of third-place finisher You Know I Know)

“I think he run good. He had a nice race.”

Robby Albarado (rider of fourth-place finisher Finnegans Wake)

“He ran great. I think I might've had him a little too close to the pace. I took him out of his game plan. He likes to be further back to swing around, but circumstances dictated that with a pace so slow that I had to be up there on the pace and he doesn't like that.”
