LEXINGTON, KY (April 7, 2013) – Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Emotional Kitten caught Adriani right at the wire to win the $60,000 Runnymede Purse for three-year-old fillies by a nose before a crowd of 11,038 on a breezy Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s crowd brought the attendance for the three-day opening weekend to a record 66,523, breaking the 2011 mark of 62,257.
Adriani, ridden by Julien Leparoux, put away the pacesetting Neith in upper stretch and opened a daylight lead only to be nipped at the wire by Emotional Kitten and jockey Joel Rosario, who posted his third of four victories for the afternoon.
Trained by Wesley Ward, Emotional Kitten covered the 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in 1:42.95. Emotional Kitten, bred by her owners, is a Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Kitten’s Joy out of the Ghazi mare Silent Emotion.
Emotional Kitten improved her record to 9-2-1-2 and boosted her bankroll to $73,815 with Sunday’s $30,060 check.
Emotional Kitten, part of an entry with third-place finisher Kitten’s Queen, returned $15.40, $7.40 and $9.60. Adriani rewarded her backers with mutuels of $6 and $4.60. Kitten’s Queen finished two lengths back in third.
Racing resumes Wednesday with an eight-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. (ET).
