Katie Mikolay Gensler's first exposure to racing came at a young age, attending Arlington Park with her family on weekends when she grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She has been the racing analyst at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans, Louisiana for the last three years. In addition to hosting the daily Churchill Downs Simulcast Network production of live Fair Grounds racing, Mikolay co-hosts the pre-race Fair Grounds Today show. She also contributes to FairGroundsRaceCourse.com as both a handicapper and blogger during the live Thoroughbred meeting and has made special appearances on HRTV and NBC Sports. During the summers, she performs similar duties at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pennsylvania for the 100-day race meet for the last five years. As an advocate for fan education, Katie has teamed up with America's Best Racing to teach wagering and produce racing 101 videos to increase horse racing awareness. She has been married to Thoroughbred horse trainer, Hank Gensler, for three years.
Race 1: CONQUEST TSUNAMI (4) has two sharp breezes from the gate and barn does well with 2yos winning at 21%. LAMONTAQUE (8) has been training sharply for a hot barn and Velazquez aboard. STORM OFF (1A) made a late run turning for home at first asking, but needs a better break.
Race 2: NAPA VALLEY (1A) makes his second start off the layoff and wears blinkers this time out. PERNICIOUS (6) should be stalking the early pace if he can handle the poly first time. FAVORITE COACH (4) ran fourth against tougher in his latest and may appreciate the longer distance with hopefully a change of tactics.
Race 3: CORPORATE CULTURE (4) seems to be training well for a strong performance off the bench for Chad Brown’s stable (24%). Filly should be a player late in the stretch. WHOLELOTAROYALTY (1) has won her last three starts and runs first off the claim with a move up in class. DISSENSION (7) won by several lengths in her latest against slightly easier competition. She’s in sharp form and runs for new connections off the claim.
Race 4: SASUENO (7) improved in his latest since he switched barns. The 6yo should move forward with a race over the track. GENTLEMANS CODE (8) should be forwardly placed from the gate for a good effort as he goes for his second win over the main track. TIREE (3) could get a better trip sitting just off the pace as he cuts back in distance and drops in class after he showed early speed last time out.
Race 5: JOE CAN GALLOP (1A) returns off the layoff with good works and can sit just off the early pace. MISTER LUCKY CAT (3) has decent turf form as should improve second start off the long layoff. TELL ALL YOU KNOW (6) raced third going 5/8ths his last two starts and should like the added distance.
Race 6: ELYSIAN (2) ran second behind an impressive maiden winner at first asking. Filly should improve second time out. SLEWS GOLDEN RULE (9) was claimed for $35k and steps up in class to face maiden allowance foes with a bullet workout on 4/18. ALLUSION (6) has a good series of drills and barn can win with a first time starter.
Race 7: MIZ LEE (1) finished second best behind LAWN PARTY in her latest effort. She has two solid performances over the grass to be the one to beat. WONDER UPON A STAR (4) is well-bred debut turf runner with jockey Julien Leparoux in the saddle. She has a plenty of works to be ready from a capable barn. TAYLOR LANE (12) runs with blinkers for her second time going route on the grass.
Race 8: SIMILU (4) needs a sharp break for an improve performance off her last performance. She broke slow with a wide trip last time out. Same rider aboard for top notch connections. TAP TWENTY ONE (10) exits a late running second and should like the extra half furlong to run into at second start off the break. KEENING (7) has been gearing up for a comeback with a strong breezes in the morning after she ran poorly in the G2 Mrs. Revere Stakes last year.
Race 9: The G2 Elkhorn Stakes – TEMERAINE (5) should be tough at the distance for solid connections. He exits a strong finish on the grass and makes his third start off the break with a strong works in the a.m. TRICKY HAT (10) moves up in class, but leads into the race in top form, but he must overcome an outside post position. TATTENHAM (8) steps up in class after two solid efforts on the grass and he has versatility.
Race 10: SHAKESPERIAN DREAM (6) just missed at this level last time out. Filly is the one to beat from off the pace second time over the track. DREAMING OF KITTEN (2) flashed early speed facing tougher maidens. Filly cuts back in distance and good works leading up to this race. JU JU JUDY (8) is a longtime maiden that ran well in his latest to move forward today.
