Katie Mikolay Gensler's first exposure to racing came at a young age, attending Arlington Park with her family on weekends where she grew up in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She has been a racing analyst for the last nine years and has worked at multiple racetracks across the country. She also has made special appearances on TVG Network, Fox Sports and NBC Sports. Katie has been a Paddock analyst for Keeneland since the 2013 Spring Meet. She’s also a weekly video blogger on KeenelandSelect.com. Happy Blue Grass Stakes Day!
Race 1: BITUMEN (5) won the G3 Sanford last July, but hasn’t since here last season, but shows good works to be a threat just off the early pace. HUNKA BURNING LOVE (6) has the experience and leads into this off a victory. The 3yo has decent dirt form to compete against these foes. CON TE PARTIRO (1) performs well against stakes company against the boys and she should go far with early speed on the rail.
Race 2: ETIQUETTE (2) has performed her best efforts for Graham Motion stable and should be the main danger stalking the early pace if ready off the bench. ANNATHELA (6) has two solid performances against allowance company earlier this year to be a major player from off the pace. PUT DA BLAME ON ME (1) needs to make a turnaround, but interesting move by capable connections to pay attention at 8-1 odds.
Race 3: MANIACAL (2) always shows up to compete, however, returns off a long break. Barn wins at 26% off the layoff and 4yo could be the speed of the speed. SCHIVARELLI (8) has some class and wears the hood to perform sharper at the distance. HOMESPUN HERO (5) has been consistent in dirt sprints.
Race 4: SWITZERLAND (12) performed well on debut and SPEIGHTSTOWN filly is the one to beat. GIUSEPPE THE GREAT (2) improved in his latest and should enjoy the cut back in distance. SOUPER FLY OVER (9) ran second behind DEREK’S SMILE, who won a stakes in his last start. Colt has switched hands and runs with blinkers on to be one to watch at 8-1 odds.
Race 5: CHANNEL MAKER (1) exits a few tough fields to move forward second start off the long layoff with two works and jockey Rosario in the irons. HEAVEN IS WAITING (2) runs first time gelding for his first start in several months after two rough trips and competes for top connections. ESCONDERA (9) is a sharp closer that exits a key race and nice workout tab to gear up for a stellar performance at long odds.
Race 6: The Grade III Commonwealth Stakes
A.P. INDIAN (8) hopes for a big comeback after a dull effort in the Breeders Cup Sprint last November. AMI’S FLATTER (7) is the reigning champion of this race last year and hopes to retain the crown as he leads into this race off a decent effort going two turns. LIMOUSINE LIBERAL (3) performs well over this course and bullet workout in the a.m. to help his case.
Race 7: The Grade II Shakertown Stakes
HOGY (7) exits one of his best efforts in a turf sprint and a major player from off the pace. RAINBOW HEIR (2) loves the turf and won back-to-back stakes races to prove he belongs at this level. PARTLY MOCHA (8) won his last two including an all out effort to win by a head against top choice.
Race 8: The Grade 1 Madison Stakes
CONSTELLATION (4) ran second best with a late run in her latest and should be a serious contender just off the pace second start in four months. PAULASSILVERLINING (6) has an impressive resume and loves to win. She has been training well for new connections and the one to beat if ready. PAID UP SUBSCRIBER (1) is be a stretch threat as she makes her first start for the Chad Brown and stablemate of second choice.
Race 9: The Grade 1 Ashland Stakes
ELATE (2) exits her best effort with a late running third in the G3 Honeybee stakes going the same as today’s distance. PRETTY CITY DANCER (3), the G1 winner, runs with blinkers off with sharp works since her last start. SUMMER LUCK (5) improved in her latest to just miss her first graded stakes victory and finish third, therefore, leads into this race in top form.
Race 10: The Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes
TAPWRIT (4) has been a major force against 3yos ever since he broke his maiden last November and the one to beat after a victorious effort win in the Tampa Bay Derby. McCRAKEN (2) has never lost with four wins including two graded stakes. He appears to be training well since he recovered from a minor ankle injury and should handle the added distance with his late kick. PRACTICAL JOKE (7) ran a sharp second behind top notch GUNNEVERA in the Fountain of Youth and could take a leap forward second start off the break.
Race 11: LIDO (2) exits a rough trip, but still displayed talent on the grass for top connections. ASTICOU TRAIL (4) has faced some tough maidens and could be her day to shine with a brief freshening. AUNTIE’S THE ONE (9) ran late on debut and well-bred turf filly moves to the grass at second asking.
