Katie Mikolay Gensler's first exposure to racing came at a young age, attending Arlington Park with her family on weekends when she grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She has been the racing analyst at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans, Louisiana for the last three years. In addition to hosting the daily Churchill Downs Simulcast Network production of live Fair Grounds racing, Mikolay co-hosts the pre-race Fair Grounds Today show. She also contributes to FairGroundsRaceCourse.com as both a handicapper and blogger during the live Thoroughbred meeting and has made special appearances on HRTV and NBC Sports. During the summers, she performs similar duties at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pennsylvania for the 100-day race meet for the last five years. As an advocate for fan education, Katie has teamed up with America's Best Racing to teach wagering and produce racing 101 videos to increase horse racing awareness. She has been married to Thoroughbred horse trainer, Hank Gensler, for three years.
Race 1: FORGET THE GAL (6) competes second time over the track for a lesser tag. Filly can be tough on the front or just off the pace. SILVER ARCH (3) makes her second start of the year and cuts back to a preferred distance. IRON GINNY (5) won impressively in a bottom level claiming race at Gulfstream and moves up in class with two good works over the track.
Race 2: SKY RACER (4) is a well-bred colt that was purchased for $160k at the Keeneland sales. He has fast works from a highly competitive 2yo stable. CIRCLE THE WORLD (3) also has several sharp works in the a.m. and barn does well with 2yos. ZIP IT KIM (1A) has a bullet work on 4/3 and barn has two finishes in the money with maidens.
Race 3: LA BRUNA FORTE (4) ran very well on the grass last time out and will be competitive even with a slight step forward. ATTAINMENT (3) should like the longer distance on the grass, which he has two decent effort over the soft footing. Barn will add blinkers first time. SECERET SOMEONE (8) hopes to break sharp for an improved effort today.
Race 4: WILD SWAVA (11) has won the last three out of five starts and will go for another win in a starter allowance against much easier company. CHERISHED OBSESSION (7) could be the lone speed. RON AND JON’S GIRL (9) leads into this race in winning form over synthetic footing.
Race 5: BREAKING DOORS (1) makes his first start as a 3yo with consistent drills and the leading rider aboard. REEDER (9) is a high purchased SPEIGHTSTOWN colt that competes for a hot barn. DR. ABRAMSON (3) has an intriguing workout schedule and runs for a top notch stable with maidens this season.
Race 6: DRAW TWO (4) just missed facing similar the last two outings. He returns off a brief freshening and runs with blinkers on. GLOBAL EXPRESS (2) was impressive winner at the distance against allowance company here last October. WHITE ROSE (9) tries hard every time and training well.
Race 7: ANNOY (3) exits a rough trip against a slightly tougher field, which she was the beaten favorite. HENNY JENNEY (2) was second with a late running performance and may improve third off the layoff. E BUILT THIS CITY (5) will try to beat her stablemate, top choice, with her early speed for the Thornbury barn.
Race 8: The G3 Appalachian Stakes – KITTEN KABOODLE (7) won a graded stakes event here going long on the grass. She may have needed her last race after she was beat in the Breeder’s Cup Juv Fillies Turf. LACAROLINA (3) is a sharp sprinter on the grass. She has a good series of works and should be part of the early pace. ZINZAY (2) can improve off her last performance with a good price.
Race 9: SHY ROSA (10) drops in for a tag and makes her second start of the year with same rider in the irons. MADAKET (11) runs for a hot barn that won with a first time starter at long odds earlier this meet. Filly has good enough works to be a threat plus leading rider in the saddle. BURNING SKY (4) has a sharp breeze from the gate from a highly competitive barn at this level.
