Katie Mikolay Gensler's first exposure to racing came at a young age, attending Arlington Park with her family on weekends when she grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She has been the racing analyst at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans, Louisiana for the last three years. In addition to hosting the daily Churchill Downs Simulcast Network production of live Fair Grounds racing, Mikolay co-hosts the pre-race Fair Grounds Today show. She also contributes to FairGroundsRaceCourse.com as both a handicapper and blogger during the live Thoroughbred meeting and has made special appearances on HRTV and NBC Sports. During the summers, she performs similar duties at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pennsylvania for the 100-day race meet for the last five years. As an advocate for fan education, Katie has teamed up with America's Best Racing to teach wagering and produce racing 101 videos to increase horse racing awareness. She has been married to Thoroughbred horse trainer, Hank Gensler, for three years.
Wednesday, April 15th
Race 1: GREEK BIRD (3) ran a close second at the distance here last fall. He runs fist off the claim for a sharp trainer (33%) and should like the return to 1 1/16th miles. I’M SO VAIN (1) could be the controlling speed of the race and mare has five wins at the distance. KATY LIED (5) has been very consistent in recent starts to throw into the mix.
Race 2: ASSOULIN (6) has a quick bullet workout on April 11th to be the one to watch from the Wes Ward barn (20%). BACK AT THE RANCH (5) is another Ward trainee racing uncoupled that has fast works to be tough. EVENTHESCORE ROSE (1) has an intriguing workout from the gate on April 7th.
Race 3: TAGHLEEB (1) has several sharp performances on the grass going long. He should be a major player second start off the break. SYCAMORE LANE (3) runs for a high percentage turf outfit (17%) and exits a troubled trip, which he was at 4-1 odds. COASTLINE (12) makes his third start off the layoff for a peak effort, but has early speed/ stalking ability with an outside draw.
Race 4: ALOHA ROSE (3) will be tough to beat from gate to wire with her early speed and drop in class. She has a bullet workout on April 2nd to be sharp and ready. INDIAN WILDCAT (4) should be sharper second time around for winning connections. She was reluctant to load last time out so watch the odds board on this one. HENRY ELLA (2) ran a distant second in her latest and cuts back in distance for a 15% trainer.
Race 5: DANZIG MOON (6) is the one to beat with two solid efforts at the distance on the dirt. He should be tough just off the pace. SOUND OF FREEDOM (8) should improve off an even effort and possess early speed from the outside for a barn 3/3 in the money this meet. CAMP BOREAL (2) has been training for a huge effort her first against winners for a stable that wins 32% off the layoff.
Race 6: SAYAAD (6) hopes for a clean getaway and improved second start off the layoff to be a major player in this spot. GRAND ARCH (4) has kept nice company on the grass as he returns off winter break with the ability to stalk at the distance. SKKY CAPTAIN (7) makes his third start off the break to be dangerous stalking for a hot barn.
Race 7: ANOTHER INCIDENT (1) has class plus he runs well fresh to be tough from off the pace. UNBRIDLEDEXPLOSION (5) has two close seconds at the distance and needed the last race off the layoff. FLEET OF GOLD (6) was overmatched in his latest and has several good efforts on the dirt against allowance company.
Race 8: The Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes
NIGHT PROWLER (2), graded stakes winner, should improve second at the distance to be the main threat in the feature. A LOT (7) tries a new distance, but he won easy going a flat mile at GP and ran second in a grade 2 event. LUCK OF THE KITTEN (1) is very dangerous with her early speed and jockey Mike Smith aboard.
Race 9: STRAIGHT A. HANNAH (8) is a first time starter with fast works to be competitive at this level. STRICTLY CLASSY (7) raced evenly at first asking and gets first time Lasix. WINTER WISH (2) drops in class and needs a clean trip her first race in almost a year.
