LEXINGTON, KY (April 13, 2014) – Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s Ready to Act, last in the early going in the field of seven, took command in upper stretch and held off Sweet Whiskey by a half-length to win the 29th running of the $200,000 Beaumont (G2) Presented by Keeneland Select. The race for 3-year-old fillies was run before a crowd of 20,741, the second-largest Sunday crowd in track history.
Trained by Chad Brown and ridden Javier Castellano, Ready to Act covered the Beard Course of seven furlongs, 184 feet in 1:28.08 over the fast main track. It was Brown’s first victory in the race and second for Castellano, who won the 2002 running on Proper Gamble.
The victory was worth 10 points toward the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 2 at Churchill Downs for Ready to Act, who has 10 points total, well below the current line of 45 for fillies under consideration for the race that is limited to 14 starters.
Richies Party Girl led the field in the run through the backstretch with Katie’s Eyes in closest pursuit. Approaching the far turn, Ready to Act began to pick off horses and at the head of the lane and caught Richies Party Girl.
After disposing of the leader, Ready to Act fought off bids from first Katie’s Eyes and then Sweet Whiskey to post her third victory in six career starts and boost her earnings to $236,651 with Sunday’s $120,000 check.
A 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale graduate, Ready to Act is a Kentucky-bred daughter of More Than Ready out of the Mizzen Mast mare Always Auditioning.
Ready to Act returned $5.60, $3.40 and $2.40. Sweet Whiskey, ridden by John Velazquez, returned $4 and $3 in finishing three-quarters of a length in front of Katie’s Eyes, who paid $3.20 to show under Corey Lanerie and added two points to her Oaks total for 12 points.
It was 3½ lengths back to Richies Party Girl, who was followed in order by Tea Time, Conspired and Co Cola.
Racing resumes Wednesday with an eight-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. ET.
