On this Throwback Thursday, Keeneland salutes Hollywood Park, which is closing Dec. 22.
Keeneland and Hollywood Park have a unique connection as both race tracks were founded during the Great Depression. Keeneland opened Oct. 15, 1936, and Hollywood Park opened June 10, 1938.
Over the years, some of the greatest performances in Thoroughbred racing have linked the Kentucky and California tracks. In 1951, Triple Crown winner Citation, racing for Keeneland’s famous neighbor, Calumet Farm, became racing’s first millionaire when he won the Hollywood Gold Cup.
In 2007, Hollywood Park launched the career of Keeneland sales graduate Zenyatta, who became the 2009 Horse of the Year. In December 2012, Zenyatta returned to Keeneland and was paraded publicly for a final time before her retirement.
