LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 26, 2017) – At odds of 28-1, Beth Leverton’s Coco Mon defeated a field of veteran turf performers to win Thursday’s $75,000 Winter Quarter Purse by 4¾ lengths before a crowd of 9,354 on a splendid October afternoon. (Click here for a replay of the race.)
One of three winners on the nine-race card for jockey Corey Lanerie, Coco Mon captured the 1 1/8-mile turf race over a course labeled “good” in 1:49.65.
Coco Mon paid $58.60, $19.60 and $9.80. Sir Dudley Digges, the 2016 Queen’s Plate winner ridden by Julien Leparoux, returned $6 and $4. Finishing third was Thatcher Street, the 2016 River City (G3) winner, who paid $4.20 under Chris Landeros.
Bred in Illinois by Gary Leverton and Beth Leverton, Coco Mon is a 7-year-old gelding by Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Monarchos out of the Peteski mare Coco Vive. He earned $35,100 for the victory, increasing his career bankroll to $274,915 with eight wins in 29 career races.
Friday is the penultimate day of Keeneland’s 17-day Fall Meet with a 10-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. ET.
Keeneland will offer a trio of carryovers on Friday. The Pick Five carryover is $98,198; the Super High Five carryover is $12,384; and the Pick Six carryover is $4,825.
On Friday, Keeneland hosts seeblue. Day at the Races to kick off an exciting fall weekend of racing and University of Kentucky basketball and football. Making appearances will be the UK Cheer team, DanceBlue, UK Band and the Wildcat.
UK students, alumni, faculty and staff receive free general admission to the track with access to reserved Grandstand seating with a valid UK ID. The first 200 UK alumni to present their Alumni Association membership card at the UK Alumni Association tables will receive a special gift.
On Friday night, UK’s men’s basketball team will host Thomas More College at Rupp Arena.
Fans can enjoy a “Kentucky Double” on Saturday, with a full afternoon of Keeneland racing followed by UK taking on archrival Tennessee at Kroger Field.
