LEXINGTON, KY (August 4, 2017) – The 2017 class of inductees into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., includes three jockeys with Keeneland connections: Javier Castellano, Victor Espinoza and Garrett Gomez. They were inducted along with Goldikova (IRE) and steeplechase selections Tom Voss and Good Night Shirt on Aug. 4.

Castellano, the leading rider during Keeneland’s 2015 and 2016 Spring Meets, has received the Eclipse Award as North America’s outstanding jockey the past four years. He has 159 wins, including 33 stakes victories, at Keeneland. His seven Grade 1 stakes at Keeneland include this year’s Maker’s 46 Mile (G1) on American Patriot.

The most memorable of Espinoza’s four Keeneland stakes wins occurred in October 2015 when he rode Triple Crown winner American Pharoah to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

Gomez, who died in 2016, won 24 stakes at Keeneland and was the leading rider of the 2010 Spring Meet with 22 victories. He recorded 119 wins at Keeneland. Gomez received Eclipse Awards as outstanding jockey in 2007 and 2008.

Voss, who died in 2014, scored his lone win at Keeneland in the 2008 Sycamore (G3) with Always First (GB). Last fall, his daughter, Elizabeth, won the Sycamore with Renown (GB).

Good Night Shirt, who received the Eclipse Award as champion steeplechaser in 2007 and 2008, was second in Keeneland’s 2007 Royal Chase for the Sport of Kings (G1). Keeneland held the race from 1998-2008.

Elected to the Hall of Fame as Pillars of the Turf, which honors people who have made extraordinary contributions to Thoroughbred racing in a leadership or pioneer capacity at the highest level, were John R. Gaines and Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps.

Gaines’ Gainesway Farm co-owned Keeneland’s 1981 Blue Grass (G1) winner, Proud Appeal. Gaines, who died in 2005, created the concept that became the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, held at Keeneland in 2015.

Phipps’ Phipps Stable campaigned 1994 Ashland (G1) and 1995 Spinster (G1) winner Inside Information and 1994 Spinster winner Dispute among its eight Keeneland stakes wins. He died in 2016.
