LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 13, 2013) -- Pablo Del Monte, owned and trained by Wesley Ward, returned to the races in style Sunday by romping to a 7 1/2-length victory in the $58,000 featured Machmer Hall Purse for 2-year-olds before a crowd of 16,927 at Keeneland.
Sunday’s strong turnout combined with 22,807 fans on Friday and 32,717 patrons on Saturday resulted in a fall weekend attendance record of 72,451. Friday’s attendance was a record for a Friday during the fall season. Saturday’s crowd marked a single-day attendance record for the fall meet and the seventh-highest single-day attendance ever.
Pablo Del Monte, who was a five-length winner in his only previous start that came at Keeneland in April, took the lead out of the gate under Kent Desormeaux and was never threatened as he widened his margin through the stretch. Pablo Del Monte completed the 6½ furlongs on the fast main track in 1:15.55.
Bred by Ward in Florida, Pablo Del Monte is a colt by Giant’s Causeway out of the Bring the Heat mare One Hot Wish. On April 12, 2007, at Keeneland, One Hot Wish, a daughter of Bring the Heat that Ward bred and raced, set a 4½-furlong world record of :48.87 when she won her career debut by 12¼ lengths.
With Sunday’s check of $30,420, Pablo Del Monte’s earnings increased to $56,700.
Favored in the field of six, Pablo Del Monte returned $4.80, $3.40 and $2.80. Tashir rallied for second under Harry Vega to return $12.20 and $5.40 with Chippewawhitechief finishing third under David Flores and paying $3.40 to show.
Racing resumes Wednesday with the ninth day of the 17-day fall meet with a nine-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. (ET).
