Quotes from the $250,000 Dixiana Elkhorn (G2)

Todd Pletcher (winning trainer of Unitarian)

“We just felt like (the race) fit timing-wise. He really improved this winter at Gulfstream. We took a shot in the Fair Grounds race (in which he was seventh in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap on Feb. 22 in his most recent start). Mike Smith rode him that day and came back and said, ‘Ignore this race. He didn’t handle this course at all.’

“I think he fits these kinds of races and he continues to improve like we thought he would. With a little more improvement, maybe he can step up a notch.”

Javier Castellano (winning rider)

“I really liked the way the race unfolded for a come-from-behind horse. I took my time. It’s a mile-and-a-half race. It’s a long distance. The first two turns I saved all the ground. The way the race developed worked out great for me. My horse gave me a good run the last part of the race. When he saw the daylight turning for home, he took off.”

Alan Garcia (rider of runner-up War Dancer)

“It was a beautiful trip, got outrun. The (winning) horse got me in the last part of the race. I got outrun and that’s it.”

Jose Lezcano (rider of third-place finisher and beaten 4-1 favorite Temeraine)

“I got in the spot I wanted, but got a little stopped at the quarter pole. Still he ran a great race. I thought we would get up for second.”
