    Quarter Horse

    A versatile breed of horse so-named because of its speed at short distances. Sprint racing, which has its roots in Colonial America, today is most popular west of the Mississippi River.

    Quarter pole

    On a one-mile track, the pole at the turn into the stretch a quarter of a mile before the finish.
