Keeneland's Turf Nursery

In the world of competitive sports, the significance of proper turf management cannot be overstated. At Keeneland, the art of turf management is crucial to racing and essential to providing our equine athletes and their riders with an equally safe and lush competition surface.

Similar to the meticulous care seen in golf, tennis or football, the dedication to tending the most perfect turf course possible is a year-round endeavor at Keeneland. Central to this program are Keeneland's two turf nurseries. These nurseries are sanctuaries where new grass is nurtured, ensuring there is a constant supply of top-quality turf.

When wear and tear begin to show on the turf course, the Keeneland team identifies the sections in need of rejuvenation and new sod is carefully cut from the nursery. The harvested sod seamlessly blends with the existing turf, ensuring a uniform and safe surface for the athletes. For every piece of sod harvested, seedlings are planted in the nursery to replace the used turf.

Keeneland’s turf management program is an extension of our commitment to ensuring the safety of all our racing surfaces and an investment in our grounds for generations to come.
