LEXINGTON, KY (Nov. 8, 2013) – Ragtime Hope, whose son Secret Circle won the Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita on Saturday, was sold for $675,000 during Friday’s fourth session of the 70th annual Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The amount was the highest price paid during the session in which gross sales for 254 horses reached $26,333,700, a 42 percent increase over the comparable session in 2012.

Other indicators for the sale also reflected competitive bidding. The session average of $103,676 was 25 percent higher than the average of $82,891 from 2012. The median of $85,000 rose 21 percent from the $70,000 last year. The RNA rate of 19 percent represented a 35 percent decrease as only 60 horses failed to meet their reserve compared with 93 during the same session last year.

To date, a total of 751 horses have been sold for $141,034,200, which is 38 percent higher than the $102,351,000 grossed during the first four days of the 2012 sale. The cumulative average of $187,795 and median of $110,000 represent respective increases of 22 percent and 37 percent.

“It’s great to see people buying mares and making long-term investments in the industry,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Walt Robertson.

“Book 2 has been very successful,” said Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell, referring to the horses cataloged for the Thursday and Friday sessions of the sale. “The quality of horses in both sessions in Book 2 was consistent, and the market reacted to it. There was very strong bidding today, topped by an extremely current catalog update thanks to the dam of Secret Circle selling. That’s what a Breeders’ Cup update can do for you.”

Ragtime Hope, in foal to Arch, is an 11-year-old stakes-winning daughter of Dixieland Band who is out of graded stakes producer Good ‘n Smart, by Smarten.

“She’s a nice mare. She’s going to be the dam of a champion, so she’s a nice addition to our broodmare band,” said agent John Moynihan, who purchased the mare for Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings.

Secret Circle’s Breeders’ Cup victory proved timely for Ragtime Hope, who was consigned by Indian Creek, agent for Longfield.

“We didn’t know what to expect,” said Shack Parrish, president of Indian Creek. “It was mainly people breeding to race for the most part (bidding) on her, and we thought (her purchase price might be) anywhere from $400,000 to a million.”

Stonestreet struck again minutes later by spending $460,000 for Revel in the Win, a 7-year-old mare carrying a full brother to 2013 Bourbon (G3) winner Poker Player. Revel in the Win, by Red Bullet out of stakes winner and stakes producer Icy Warning, by Caveat, was consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Jody Huckabay’s Elm Tree Farm LLC, agent.

Peter O’Callaghan’s Woods Edge Stables paid $325,000 for the day’s top-priced weanling, a colt by Lemon Drop Kid. Indian Creek, agent, consigned the colt, who is out of the Forestry mare Forest Valentine, a full sister to Grade 2 winner Carolyn’s Cat.

Russell noted the strong trade for weanlings throughout the session.

“People are very hungry for horses,” he said. “I thought the weanling market today was probably as strong, if not stronger, than the first (three days of the sale). Consignors with exceptional foals received premium dollars from buyers. There were all kinds of competition.”

The session’s leading buyer was Chile’s Don Alberto Corp., which purchased 10 horses for $2,205,000. Don Alberto Corp. remains the leading buyer for the entire sale, spending $10.64 million on 32 horses.

The leading consignor during the session was Eaton Sales, which sold 19 horses for $2,973,000.

Cumulatively, the leading consignor is Lane’s End Farm, which has sold 56 horses for $18,318,000.

Saturday marks the first of two days that comprise Book 3 of the November Sale. The 10-day sale continues through Thursday, Nov. 14. Sessions begin daily at 10 a.m. ET. The entire sale is streamed live at Keeneland.com
