LEXINGTON, KY (June 5, 2014) – Four graduates of Keeneland’s 2012 September Yearling Sale are among the 3-year-olds entered in the 146th running of the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) Saturday at Belmont Park.
Eighteen Belmont winners are graduates of Keeneland sales, highlighted by recent winners Palace Malice (2013), Ruler On Ice (2011), Drosselmeyer (2010), Da’Tara (2008), Rags to Riches (2007) and Jazil (2006).
The September Sale alumni entered in the 2014 Belmont are:
Matterhorn (Tapit-Winter Garden) – Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, consigned the colt, purchased by Hoby Kight for $110,000. Todd Pletcher trains Matterhorn for the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and breeder Town & Country Farms Corp.
Medal Count (Dynaformer-Brisquette) – Owner Spendthrift Farm LLC paid $360,000 for the colt from the consignment of Three Chimneys Sales, agent for breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC. Dale Romans trains Medal Count, who won Keeneland’s Transylvania (G3).
Ride On Curlin (Curlin-Magical Ride) – Owner Daniel Dougherty paid $25,000 for the Preakness (G1) runner-up from Lane’s End, agent. Billy Gowan trains Ride On Curlin, who was bred by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. and Louise Ireland Humphrey Revocable Trust-2008.
Wicked Strong (Hard Spun-Moyne Abbey) – Owner Centennial Farms purchased the Twinspires.com Wood Memorial (G1) winner for $375,000 from Three Chimneys Sales, agent. Jimmy Jerkens trains the colt, who was bred by William F. Lynn.
