LEXINGTON, KY (July 28, 2016) – Keeneland is putting the final touches on the catalog for its premier September Yearling Sale, scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 12, but the work of the Sales staff is not finished once the books are sent to the printer.
Members of the Sales team have spent much of the summer on a marathon excursion to inspect yearlings at farms in the U.S. and abroad, working with potential consignors to select those individuals for the September Sale. The completion of the inspection process and finalization of the sales catalog signal the next chapter in preparation for the world’s most important Thoroughbred auction: traveling to race tracks, training centers and elsewhere to meet with prospective buyers.
This personal outreach is one component of Keeneland’s year-round buyer recruitment strategy, which touches all of North America and some 50 countries where Thoroughbred racing is conducted.
“Keeneland takes great pride in marketing the horses in the September Sale, which offers a significant number of quality horses that appeal to horsemen no matter their bankroll and no matter where they race,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell said. “One testament to the success of the September Sale is the fact that it has produced more graded stakes winners around the world – 112 to date – than all other North American sales companies combined.”
This year, Keeneland sales graduates have performed exceptionally well on the world stage, winning stakes in the U.S. and Australia, Brazil, Dubai, France, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Panama, Puerto Rico and Russia. September Sale graduates include Triple Crown winners Nyquist (Kentucky Derby-G1), Exaggerator (Preakness-G1) and Creator (Belmont-G1) and such North American Grade 1 winners as Beholder, Catch a Glimpse and I’m a Chatterbox.
Internationally, September Sale graduates include Group 1 winners Hawkbill and Order of St George (IRE); Group 2 winners Boynton, Lady Aurelia and Roly Poly; and Group 3 winners Levante Lion, Polar River and Taareef.
Building relationships with horsemen is Keeneland’s most important development initiative, creating a buying bench unparalleled in breadth and depth for its three annual sales and also attracting major owners and trainers to participate in the track’s Spring and Fall race meets.
Sales staff based in Lexington travel continuously during the year and work in concert with a full-time European sales representative based in London and a local representative in Australasia.
Additionally, Keeneland raises its presence internationally via sponsorship of major stakes races in Ireland, Korea, Australia and Central and South America.
