Keeneland Sales Grads among Sovereign Awards Finalists

LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 25, 2017) – Queen’s Plate winner Sir Dudley Digges is among the Keeneland sales graduates who are finalists for 2016 Sovereign Awards as champions in Canada. The awards will be presented April 13 at Woodbine.

To be eligible for a Sovereign Award, a 2-year-old must have made at least two starts in Canada; 3-year-olds and older horses must have raced there at least three times during their 2016 campaigns.

Sovereign Award finalists who are graduates of Keeneland sales are:

Two-Year-Old Filly: Glorious Song winner Let It Ride Mom ($77,000, 2015 September Yearling Sale).

Two-Year-Old Male: Vandal winner Channel Maker (offered at the 2015 September Sale).

Three-Year-Old Male: Canadian Derby (G3) winner Ready Intaglio (offered at the 2014 September Sale); Queen’s Plate winner Sir Dudley Digges ($72,000 2013 November Sale; $110,000 2014 September Sale).

Champion Older Female: Maple Leaf (G3) winner Ice Festival (offered at the 2013 September Sale); Ontario Matron (G3) and Seaway (G3) winner Midnight Miley ($45,000, 2013 September Sale).

Champion Older Male: Seagram Cup (G2) winner Breaking Lucky ($100,000, 2012 November Sale).

Champion Female Sprinter: Hendrie (G3) winner Cactus Kris ($2,000, 2011 November Sale); Midnight Miley.

Champion Male Sprinter: Gallant Bob (G3) and Woodstock winner Noholdingback Bear ($25,000, 2014 November Sale).

These finalists appeared in the Keeneland sales ring following their 2016 campaigns:

  • Nandi and Victorian Queen winner Conquest Vivi (2-year-old filly), sold for $480,000 at the November Sale;
  • Three-time stakes winner Conquest Enforcer (3-year-old male, male turf, male sprinter) sold for $785,000 at the November Sale and next won the Mathis Brothers Mile (G2);
  • Nassau (G2), Dance Smartly (G2) and Victoriana winner Lexie Lou (female turf) sold for $1 million at the November Sale;
  • Cactus Kris was offered at the November Sale, and Midnight Miley was offered at the 2017 January Horses of All Ages Sale.
