Keeneland Sales Graduates Lady Eli, Cupid Sweep Grade 1 Stakes

May 30, 2017

LEXINGTON, KY (May 30, 2017) – Keeneland sales graduates Lady Eli and Cupid captured the weekend’s two Grade 1 stakes, taking the Gamely (G1) and Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1), respectively, at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Sheep Pond Partners’s Lady Eli solidified her return to the top of the game when she fended off Goodyearforroses (IRE) to capture the Gamely. Bred by Runnymede Farm and Catesby Clay in Kentucky, the daughter of Divine Park is a granddaughter of Runnymede foundation mare Kazadancoa (FR), a daughter of Green Dancer purchased by Clay in France in 1982. Runnymede consigned Lady Eli to Keeneland’s 2013 September Yearling Sale, where she sold for $160,000 to Pete Bradley’s Bradley Thoroughbreds, agent.

“She was a very forward filly,” Runnymede CEO Brutus J. Clay III said. “When prepping her class of yearlings, she was our best walker and very well balanced. She was the alpha in the field, but pretty straightforward to work with in the barn. There is a video of a conversation between previous Runnymede manager Martin O’Dowd and myself, and she was clearly our top pick of the fillies that year.”

Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith’s Cupid made his 2017 debut a winning one in the Gold Cup. Bred by JKG Thoroughbreds LLC in Kentucky, Cupid was a $900,000 purchase from Book 1 of the 2014 September Sale. Out of the Beau Genius daughter Pretty ‘n Smart, he was consigned by Van Meter Sales.

“We (Olin Gentry, Renee Dailey and I) always liked him physically,” Tom VanMeter said. “While many of the Pulpit/Tapit line horses can be plenty fierce, this colt had a lovely, sweet disposition. He was a mature, correct, long-barreled yearling and a very good walker. He got to the sale in perfect order having been prepared to the “T” by Harvey Turley and his team at Waggoner farm, where he was foaled and raised.

“At the sale he was very popular and seemed to land on the list of all the big boys, (and he had) 11 pre-sale veterinary work-ups by a veritable who’s who of yearling colt buyers,” he said. “We are eagerly anticipating selling Cupid's full sister this September and his American Pharoah weanling half-sister next year!”
