LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 21, 2014) – Kid Cruz, V. E. Day and Wicked Strong will each vie to become the fifth consecutive Keeneland sales graduate to win Saturday’s $1.25 million Travers (G1) at Saratoga.
Keeneland sales graduates have dominated the prestigious Midsummer Derby in recent years, winning the past four consecutive runnings:
Will Take Charge won the 2013 Travers en route to becoming champion 3-year-old male. The Unbridled’s Song colt was purchased by Willis Horton for $425,000 from consignor Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency at the 2011 September Yearling Sale.
Golden Ticket took the 2012 Travers in a dead-heat. Carter Stewart bought the Speightstown colt from Niall Brennan Stables for $100,000 at the 2011 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
Stay Thirsty powered his way to victory in the 2011 Travers. Whitehorse Stables paid $160,000 for the Bernardini colt from Glennwood Farm at the 2009 September Sale. He would go on to win the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct in 2012.
The streak began with Afleet Express’ win in 2010. The son of Afleet Alex was consigned by Gainesway Farm and sold to Oxbow Racing for $245,000 at the 2008 January Horses of All Ages Sale.
Post time for the Travers is set for 5:45 p.m. ET.
