Keeneland September Yearling Sale Produces Five Preakness Entrants

Friday’s Black-Eyed Susan features six Keeneland sales graduates

LEXINGTON, KY (May 15, 2014) – Five of the 10 3-year-olds entered in Saturday’s 139th running of the $1 million Preakness (G1), the second jewel of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, are graduates of Keeneland’s 2012 September Yearling Sale.

Twenty-one winners of the Preakness, run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., are Keeneland sales alumni. They include six of the past seven winners of the classic: Oxbow (2013), I’ll Have Another (2012), Shackleford (2011), Lookin At Lucky (2010), Big Brown (2008) and Curlin (2007). 

On Friday, six Keeneland sales graduates are among the 11 3-year-old fillies entered to compete in the 90th running of the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) at Pimlico.

The Keeneland September Sale graduates entered in the 2014 Preakness are:

Dynamic Impact (Tiznow-Featherbed) – Mark Casse, agent, purchased the Illinois Derby (G3) winner for $125,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Casse trains Dynamic Impact for John C. Oxley, the leading owner during Keeneland’s 2014 Spring Meet. The colt was bred by Blue Heaven Farm LLC.

Kid Cruz (Lemon Drop Kid-Layreebelle) – Black Swan Stable, which owns Kid Cruz in partnership with Vina Del Mar Thoroughbreds LLC, paid $80,000 for him from Select Sales, agent. Linda Rice trains the winner of the Federico Tesio and Private Terms Stakes, who was bred by Machmer Hall.

Ride On Curlin (Curlin-Magical Ride) – Owner Daniel Dougherty paid $25,000 for the Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up from Lane’s End, agent. Billy Gowan trains Ride On Curlin, who was bred by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. and Louise Ireland Humphrey Revocable Trust-2008.

Ring Weekend (Tapit-Free the Magic) – Owners West Point Thoroughbreds and St. Elias Stable bought the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner for $310,000 from Gainesway, agent. Graham Motion trains Ring Weekend, bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds Ltd.

Social Inclusion (Pioneerof the Nile-Saint Bernadette) – Manny Azpurua trains Social Inclusion, third in the Twinspires.com Wood Memorial (G1), for owner Rontos Racing Stable Corp., which bought the colt for $60,000. Betz Thoroughbreds Inc., agent, consigned Social Inclusion, bred by Robert Tillyer, Martin Keough and Dr. Chet Blackey.

 

The Keeneland sales graduates entered in the Black-Eyed are:

America (A.P. Indy-Lacadena) – Consignor Denali Stud (Craig and Holly Bandoroff), agent, offered the filly for sale at the 2012 September Sale. She races for her breeder, Bobby Flay, and is trained by Bill Mott.

Euphrosyne (Harlan’s Holiday-Three Graces) – Steve Asmussen trains the Honeybee (G3) winner for owners Gilliam S. Campbell, Ralph Stayer, Shelly Stayer, Dan Clark and Greg Skoda. James B. Keogh (Grovendale), agent, offered the filly at the 2012 September Sale. Niall Brennan Stables, agent, offered her at the 2013 Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Euphrosyne was bred by WinStar Farm LLC.

Image of Anna (Ready’s Image-French Gate) – Breeder Blandford Stud (Padraig Campion), agent, consigned the filly to the 2012 September Sale, where David Robbins purchased her for $40,000. The Elkstone Group LLC owns Image of Anna, trained by Rick Violette.

Joint Return (Include-Brunswick Star) – Owner Main Line Racing Stable paid $60,000 for the Calder Oaks winner at the 2012 September Sale from the consignment of Moreau Bloodstock International, agent. John Servis trains Joint Return, who was bred by Virginia D. Moore and Include Syndicate.

La Mejor Fiesta (Harlan’s Holiday-Better Now) – Eaton Sales, agent, consigned the Trapeze Stakes winner to the 2012 September Sale, where she was purchased by Cromwell Bloodstock for $70,000. Bred by Forging Oaks LLC, the filly races for Ice Wine Stable and is trained by Wesley Ward.

Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat-Exotic Bloom) – Repole Stable owns and Todd Pletcher trains the Demoiselle (G2) and Tempted (G3) winner. For breeder Harvey Clarke and Brookdale Farm LLC, Brookdale Sales, agent, consigned the filly to the 2012 September Sale, where Woodford Thoroughbred Sales purchased her for $47,000.
