LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 8, 2014) -- A candidate for a second consecutive title as Horse of the Year, Wise Dan is one of 12 horses with Keeneland connections that today were named finalists for 2013 Eclipse Awards. The champions, which are determined by a vote of Daily Racing Form, National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, will be announced Jan. 18 at Gulfstream Park.
Wise Dan, who is based at Keeneland with trainer Charlie LoPresti, won the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1), Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) and Keeneland’s Maker’s 46 Mile (G1). The gelding also is a finalist for champion older male and champion male turf horse.
Wise Dan is a homebred racing for Morton Fink, a finalist for the Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder.
Other Eclipse Award finalists that raced at Keeneland in 2013 or are graduates of Keeneland sales are:
Horse of the Year: Grade 1 winner Will Take Charge ($425,000 purchase at the 2011 September Yearling Sale); Wise Dan.
Two-Year-Old Male: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year’s Day ($425,000, 2012 September Sale).
Two-Year-Old Filly: Grade 1 winner She’s a Tiger ($150,000, 2012 September Sale).
Three-Year-Old Male: Belmont (G1) winner Palace Malice ($25,000, 2011 September Sale; $200,000, 2012 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale); Will Take Charge.
Three-Year-Old Filly: Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner Beholder ($180,000, 2011 September Sale).
Older Male: Grade 1 winner Game On Dude ($210,000 RNA, 2008 September Sale); Wise Dan.
Older Female: Grade 1 winner Joyful Victory ($60,000, 2009 January Horses of All Ages Sale); Grade 1 winner Royal Delta ($8.5 million, 2011 November Breeding Stock Sale).
Male Sprinter: Secret Circle ($17,000 RNA, 2010 September Sale).
Female Sprinter: Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Groupie Doll ($3.1 million, 2013 November Sale), who was third in Keeneland’s Thoroughbred Club of America (G2); Mizdirection ($85,000, 2009 September Sale).
Female Turf Horse: Mizdirection.
Male Turf Horse: Wise Dan.
Several additional finalists for Eclipse Awards are people and farms with connections to Keeneland racing and sales in 2013. They include Ken and Sarah Ramsey (finalists as outstanding owner and breeder), who won a record 25 races during the spring meeting and a fall-season record 17 races in October to top all owners; stakes-winning owner Juddmonte Farms, sponsor of Keeneland’s Juddmonte Spinster (G1); stakes-winning trainers Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher; stakes-winning jockey Joel Rosario, who won a spring record 38 races in April; and Adena Springs (breeder), a prominent participant at Keeneland sales.
