LEXINGTON, KY (May 1, 2014) – Ten 3-year-olds who are graduates of Keeneland sales, including Grade 1 winners Danza and Wicked Strong, are among the 21 horses entered in Saturday’s 140th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).
Keeneland has sold 19 Kentucky Derby winners, most recently 2012 winner I’ll Have Another. Keeneland sales graduates have won nine of the past 12 Triple Crown races and include 2013 Preakness (G1) winner Oxbow and Belmont (G1) winner Palace Malice.
The Keeneland sales graduates who were entered in the 2014 Derby are:
Chitu (Henny Hughes-Sea Gift) – Trackside Farm, agent for breeders Tom Evans, Macon Wilmil Equines and Marjac Farms, consigned the Sunland Derby (G3) winner to Keeneland’s 2012 September Yearling Sale, where Southern Chase Farm purchased him for $67,000. Bob Baffert trains the colt for owner Tanma Corporation.
Danza (Street Boss-Champagne Royale) – Owner Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners paid $105,000 for the Arkansas Derby (G1) winner at the 2012 September Sale. He was consigned by Brandywine Farm (Jim and Pam Robinson), agent for breeders Liberation Farm and Brandywine. Todd Pletcher trains the colt.
Harry’s Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday-Daisy Mason) – Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent consigned the 96ROCK Stakes winner to the 2012 September Sale, where Erv Woolsey and Keith Asmussen purchased him for $50,000. Jones bred the colt with his brother, B. Ned Jones. Mike Maker trains Harry’s Holiday for Skychai Racing LLC, Sand Dollar Stable LLC, Terry Raymond and Jana Wagner.
Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday-Refugee) – Trainer Bob Baffert, agent, purchased the Rebel (G2) winner for $300,000 from Betz Thoroughbreds, agent, at the 2012 September Sale. Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman race the colt, who was bred by Betz/D.J. Stable/Kidder/J. Betz/Robenalt. (Hoppertunity was scratched the morning of May 1.)
Intense Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday-Intensify) – Owner Starlight Racing, with Frank Brothers, agent, paid $380,000 for the Risen Star (G2) winner from the consignment of Select Sales, agent, at the 2012 September Sale. Todd Pletcher trains the colt, bred by Machmer Hall and Haymarket Farm.
Medal Count (Dynaformer-Brisquette) – Three Chimneys Sales, agent for breeder Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, consigned the colt to the 2012 September Sale, where Spendthrift Farm LLC purchased him for $360,000. Dale Romans trains Medal Count, who won Keeneland’s Transylvania (G3) and was second in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1).
Ride On Curlin (Curlin-Magical Ride) – Owner Daniel Dougherty paid $25,000 for the Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up, who was consigned to the 2012 September Sale by Lane’s End, agent. Billy Gowan trains Ride On Curlin, who was bred by G. Watts Humphrey Jr. and Louise Ireland Humphrey Revocable Trust-2008.
Vinceremos (Pioneerof the Nile-Kettle’s Sister) – Twin Creeks Racing, which owns the Sam F. Davis (G3) winner in partnership with WinStar Farm, paid $340,000 for the colt at Keeneland’s 2013 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale from the consignment of Wavertree Stables Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), agent. At the 2012 September Sale, Oregon Bloodstock paid $140,000 for the colt, who was consigned by Dapple Stud, agent. Machmer Hall bred Vinceremos, trained by Todd Pletcher.
We Miss Artie (Artie Schiller-Athena’s Gift) – Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey purchased the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral (G3) winner for $90,000 from the consignment of Cara Bloodstock (Bernard McCormack), agent, at the 2012 September Sale. Richard L. Lister bred the colt, who also won Keeneland’s 2013 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (G1) for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Wicked Strong (Hard Spun-Moyne Abbey) – Owner Centennial Farms purchased the Twinspires.com Wood Memorial (G1) winner for $375,000 from Three Chimneys Sales, agent, at the 2012 September Sale. William F. Lynn bred the colt, trained by Jimmy Jerkens.
