Success Begins at Keeneland

Keeneland’s 2014 September Yearling Sale produced a number of impressive Grade 1 winning 3-year-olds in 2016.

Keeneland conducts three premier Thoroughbred auctions annually. In keeping with its founders’ mission to perpetuate and improve the sport, revenue from Keeneland sales is reinvested in purse money for the track’s world-class racing program and initiatives that benefit the entire horse industry.

Nyquist

Undefeated champion 2-year-old Nyquist scored his eighth consecutive victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1). His impressive string of Grade 1 wins also included the Del Mar Futurity and FrontRunner in Southern California, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland and the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Nyquist, by Uncle Mo, also sold as a weanling at Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale.

Exaggerator

Exaggerator captured the Preakness (G1) to highlight an accomplished 3-year-old season that followed a win in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and a runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and preceded a 1 1/2-length victory in the Haskell Invitational (G1). At two, the colt by Curlin won the Saratoga Special (G2) in New York and the Delta Downs Jackport (G3) in Louisiana.

Creator

Creator showed gutsy determination against 12 rivals in the Belmont (G1). Blocked behind a wall of horses, the Tapit colt weaved his way through traffic and used the length of the stretch to reel in Grade 2 winner Destin and win the race by a nose. Creator's season also featured a late-running win in the Arkansas Derby (G1).

Drefong

Drefong pushed his consecutive win streak to five when he won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) for his second stakes win. In his previous race, the 3-year-old colt by Gio Ponti traveled to Saratoga and crushed his rivals in the King’s Bishop (G1) in his stakes debut. Drefong has won those five races by a combined margin of nearly 23 lengths.

Arrogate

The 3-year-old Arrogate ran down his heralded older rival, odds-on favorite California Chrome, in deep stretch of $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) to win by a half-length. The impressive performance marked the fifth consecutive victory for the son of Unbridled’s Song and came the race after the colt effortlessly dispatched 12 of his peers in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga, winning by 13½ lengths and smashing the 37-year-old track and stakes record.
