A late rush of action with a pair of $1 million or more horses selling in the final 30 minutes of Tuesday’s session of the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling Sale pushed the total to eight such yearlings in the first two days of the four-day Book 1 sale. The total surpassed the seven hips that reached that mark during the entirety of the last year’s September Sale.
Four yearlings drew $1 million dollar or more purchases on for the second time in as many days, continuing a strong market to this point of the industry gold-standard sale.
Topping Tuesday’s session was the $1.3 million paid by Lane Seliger of Baumann Stables for Hip No. 291, a filly by Grade 1 stakes winner Bernardini out of Pacific Spell. Consigned by Airdrie Stud Inc., agent, the filly is a half-sister to champion and multiple Grade 1 stakes winner Proud Spell.
M.V. Magnier of Coolmore Stud quickly followed suit by paying $1 million for Hip No. 325, a colt by leading sire Tapit out of Pretty ‘n Smart. The yearling was consigned by VanMeter Sales, agent. It was the second $1 million yearling purchase for Magnier during the 2013 September Sale.
The second of four Book 1 sessions closed out strong when Mark Puhich, agent, signed the paper on a $1 million sale of Hip No. 426, a colt by Smart Strike out of Canadian champion Serenading. The yearling was consigned by Hill ‘n Dale Sales Agency, agent. Puhich purchased the colt for a partnership headed by Mark Dedomenico.
The final hip of the day, No. 438, sent everyone home buzzing after Hugo Merry Bloodstock signed the paperwork for Andrew Rosen on a $1 million filly by Malibu Moon out of Shop Again. The filly is a half-sister to Power Broker by Pulpit.
