Jackie Fisher and Kim Hoover win 2016 Keeneland/Red Mile Tournament of Champions

A long night of chalky winners took a dramatic turn at the end of Saturday’s Tournament of Champions held at the Red Mile, with “cap horses” taking the last two races at Churchill Downs and turning the leaderboard upside down.

Jackie Fisher and Kim Hoover each chose 21-1 shot Perfect Execution to win the finale, and moved past 23 players to finish 1-2 and win fully-paid entries to the 2017 Horseplayers World Series at the Orleans in Las Vegas.  The top five players had the winner, and long-time leader Ernest Gaines was relegated to sixth place.

Jackie’s win continued a family tradition, following his father Bronnie’s win in 2015.  Kim won her third trip to Vegas in the past eight years, a remarkable feat considering the depth of the fields she has topped.

A field of 133 players, all having qualified at the Red Mile or Keeneland throughout 2016, enjoyed a great meal and a big day of racing.

The year-long quest to qualify for next November’s 2017 Tournament of Champions begins on Friday, January 6, with the first of the Friday night contests featuring Turfway Park races.
