Today’s Gulfstream horses Hot List races to watch – Thursday, March 14, 2013

By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch                  B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

4th race – (2) Morethanahalo  (a B last time) finished second to a runaway winner last time. Meets a modest group here and should break his maiden on his fourth try. (3) Western High tired in his well-bet career debut for Pletcher. Figures to improve off that effort. (5) Argosy debuts for Romans and deserves a close look. (1) Ten Items Or Less flopped on turf for Pletcher; shows a sharp work for his dirt debut. Betting strategy:  2 to win, place. Exacta box:  1-2-3-5.

5th race – (9) Wet One (C) was bet down from even money to 3-5 and finished second despite a wide trip. Has been second in her last three starts but should make it to the winner’s circle this time. (5) Will to Shine didn’t show much on dirt; may rebound back on turf. (1) Mass Invasion was hurt by a wide trip and figures to benefit  from a rail trip. (4) Patient Approval was third after a poor start and fits in at this level.  Betting strategy: 9 to win, place.  Exacta box: 1-4-5-9.

7th race – (2) Midnite Silver (A) finished a wide third in his last start. Likely to improve off that thanks to an inside post and a switch to Lopez. (3) Tom Kitten (B) was also hurt by a wide trip in the same race as the top choice. Should be right there at the finish. (1) Julius Geezer beat the top two in their last race but adds some weight and must handle an extra half-furlong. (7) Gentleman Jackson makes it four to return from that Feb. 22 race and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-7.

9th race – (7) Southpaw Slammer (A) was a good third at this level off a layoff. Shows a bullet work since then and seems poised to notch another win for trainer Chad Brown. (2) Drunken Love looms the one to catch from an inside post. (8) Starship Wildcat is in excellent form and should be included in the exotics. (3) Saint Pete wanted no part of two turns; will relish a return to a sprint.  Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-7-8. Doubles: 7 with 1-2-5-6 and 2-3-7-8 with 1-2-5-6.

10th race – (1) Starship Amanda (D) dropped from 7-1 to 5-1 and looked like a winner at the eighth pole before tiring in the final yards. Moves up slightly in claiming price but can handle these with minor improvement. (6) Starlight Dreamer was a fast-closing second last time and shapes up as the one to fear. (2) Go the Distance adds blinkers and might surprise from the rail. (5) Conzig has early speed and could last for a share.  Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-6.
