Today’s Gulfstream Hot List races to watch – Wednesday, March 20, 2013

By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch                  B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

5th race – (1) Apollo Sky  (a C last time) was bet down from 3-1 to 9-5 then showed some determination in battling back in the final furlong. Was given a break but shows a bullet work for his return and should be ready for a top effort. (2) Bear’s Spirit (C) was a front-running, odds-on winner in the maiden claiming ranks, but is dangerous here if he can duplicate that effort. (8) Sorgho was second against better in his last dirt race. (3) Assimilation has been third four times in a row and belongs in the exotics.  Betting strategy:  1 to win, place. Exacta box:  1-2-3-8. Doubles: 1-2-8 with 3-4-7-8-11.

6th race – (7) Spivey (B) ran surprisingly well on dirt; should improve back on turf. (4) Scofield (B) was a wide fourth last time and shows a sharp blowout for his first start in two months. He’s won off a similar layoff before. (3) Midnight Notes was a rallying third last time at a similar level and cannot be overlooked here. (8) Act of Madness has some speed, drops in class and can grab a share of the purse against these. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place.  Exactas: 4-7 with 3-4-7-8-11 and 3-4-7-8-11 with 4-7.

8th race – (6) Holy Command  (C) took a late drop from 11-1 to 6-1 but had only a mild late bid and settled for third. Can score at a nice price if he improves off that effort. (2 ) Off the Page was highly impressive in his turf debut; looks like the one to fear. (1) Rip Roarin Ritchie closed out his 2-year-old season running in stakes. But is he ready for his first start in 5 months? (3) Party Lad also comes off a stakes try and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-6. Doubles: 1-2-3-6 with 1-3-4-5. Pick 3: 1-2-3-6 with 1-3-4 with 1-9-10.

9th race – (3) Isutalkintome(D) took late money, dropping from 9-1 to 5-1, but never fired. Drops in class here and could atone off the jockey switch to Castellano. (4) The Best Glacier won at this level then was no match for Bernie the Maestro. Fits better here. (1) Rapid Runner has speed and the rail, making him dangerous in this spot. (5) Imperial Czar could sneak into the exotics.  Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-5. Doubles:  1-3-4-5 with 1-9-10-11.

10th race – (9) Corinthianna (A) comes off an excellent debut effort. Was three wide throughout and still held on for second at 24-1. Odds will be much lower this time, but she should make amends for that runner-up finish. (1) Faerie Queene steps up off two solid efforts and a claim and seems ready for tougher competition. (10) Hidden Music debuts for Clement, who does well with his first-time starters. (11) Off the Street returns to turf and adds Lasix; could sneak into the mix at a nice price. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exactas: 9 over 1-2-4-8-10-11 and Exacta box: 1-9-10-11.
