Players come from across the country twice a year to Keeneland to compete in the DRF/NTRA qualifying tournament for the National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas. On Saturday, just like the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena, the local players had a home court advantage, and all three winners were from the Lexington area.
Julie Loboyko of Lexington took home first prize of $7,700 by picking four winners and four place horses of her 15 wagers. Mike Cooper of Lexington took another route, catching longshot Lighthouse Bay in the 5th at Saratoga and using that $60 hit along with some heady chalk plays at the end to grab second place and $3,850. David Updike of Versailles got the bomb of the day, 42-1 Main Entrance in the 9th at Monmouth to get up for third and the final Vegas spot, taking home $2,100 in prize money.
Julie, Mike and David will join approximately 500 of the best handicappers in the world at the $1.5 million Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship, presented by Racetrack Television Network, Sovereign Stable and Treasure Island, January 24-26, 2014 at Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip.
Upcoming qualifiers at Keeneland are scheduled for October 13th and December 7th. Please check our website, www.keeneland.com, for full details.
