April 19, 2019

Trainer Mark Casse, who has a string of horses at Keeneland, and Avie’s Flatter, who won the Kentucky Utilities Transylvania (G3) here April 5, were among the winners at the 44th annual Sovereign Awards in Canada Thursday night.

Casse, who trains 2018 Canadian Horse of the Year and Keeneland sales graduate Wonder Gadot, won his eighth consecutive Sovereign as Canada’s leading trainer. In 2018 at Keeneland, Casse won three stakes. In his career, he has won three training titles here.

Avie’s Flatter was named Canada’s outstanding 2-year-old male of 2018. Trained by Josie Carroll, Avie’s Flatter is being pointed to the $400,000 American Turf (G2) at Churchill Downs on May 4.

Avie’s Flatter is owned by breeder Ivan Dalos, whose Tall Oaks Farm won the Sovereign as outstanding breeder.

Carroll also trained Moonlit Promise, who earned the Sovereign as champion female sprinter.
