The Keeneland grounds are quiet in the summer months as the flurry of activity from the Spring abates, and the preparations for the Fall commence. But little do most people know, it's one of the best times to visit the grounds. Our doors are always open – literally 365 days a year – so we invite you to plan your trip to Keeneland with the helpful tips below in mind.
1. Grab breakfast at the Track Kitchen
Known as Lexington's "best kept secret," the Keeneland Track Kitchen is located in the heart of the stable area, and features one of the best breakfast burritos in town. Enjoy a hearty meal next to our notable horsemen, before you head out to watch morning workouts. The Track Kitchen is open Monday - Friday from 5 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday from 5 a.m. - 11 a.m in the summer.
2. Watch morning workouts on the track
You've heard of Sunrise Trackside every Saturday during the race meet, but did you know you can watch morning workouts throughout the summer as well? Take your breakfast to-go and head up to the track to watch some of the sport's best train at Keeneland. Make sure to arrive between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. so you don't miss it!
3. Go for a stroll (or a run if that's more your speed)
Need to burn off that burrito? Many don't realize that Keeneland is open to the public year-round for free, so walkers, runners, and dogs alike enjoy the hundreds of acres of Bluegrass to get their workout in. In fact, Keeneland hosts 16 run/walks each year in support of local Central Kentucky charities.
4. Take a tour
Keeneland's historic legacy draws people in from all over the world. Our renowned tour program is the best way to learn all about the fascinating stories of yesteryear. To pique your interest, did you know that the current grandstand-side Winner's Circle (a stop on the tour) was built when Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1984, so she could avoid walking over the dirt to the infield where the presentations previously occurred? If you don't have availability for a scheduled tour, you can always stop by the Welcome Center to pick up a self-guided walking tour.
5. Stop by the Keeneland Shop
Don't forget to pick up a gift at our newly renovated Keeneland Shop, located near the Welcome Center at South Gate, to commemorate your visit. Browse our exclusive line of Keeneland-branded merchandise, equine gifts, home goods, barware and luxury apparel. Open Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
6. Browse the Keeneland Library
Up on the Hill resides the Keeneland Library, one of the world's largest thoroughbred repositories. The Library houses nearly 30,000 books, approximately 1 million photographic negatives and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles about all aspects of the equine industry. Visit during weekdays, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
7. Head to Keeneland Mercantile
On your way out (or in), head downtown to experience our newest extension of the Keeneland Shop – Keeneland Mercantile. Grab a coffee next door and peruse the curated goods made by some of the best craftsmen the South has to offer. Located in City Center next to Starbucks, Keeneland Mercantile celebrates the heritage and tradition of our region. Visit Monday - Saturday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Sunday noon - 6 p.m.
