Keeneland, recently named one of the 2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky, is preparing for an exciting year that includes the return of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships with today’s announcement of activities in February and March designed to fill more than 2,000 seasonal positions for the upcoming Spring Meet: a Seasonal Job Fair on Feb. 29 and March 23 and a Hiring Center that will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout March. Staffing needs for the Spring Meet, which covers 16 days of racing from April 2-24 and the annual Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) celebrations on May 1-2, are available in Food and Beverage, Parking and Security, The Keeneland Shop, Admissions, Programs, Track Maintenance, Guest Services and other areas.
“Keeneland’s seasonal workforce is invaluable to our operations, and we welcome people who want to join our team, share their talents and make some extra money,” Keeneland Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Gabbert said. “The Job Fairs and Hiring Center also are opportunities for people to get in on the action for the Fall Meet in October and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Nov. 6-7.”
Keeneland’s seasonal employees, who last April came from 168 cities in 60 Kentucky counties and 26 states as far away as California represent a unique Kentucky tradition. It is not uncommon for several generations of the same family to be employed during a race meet and for an exceptional employee to obtain a full-time position.
Positions and Benefits
Keeneland and Keeneland Hospitality offer seasonal employment in a variety of areas for the spring. Seasonal jobs are available in Food and Beverage such as cooks, dining room servers, concessions, and more! There are also seasonal jobs in Parking and Security, The Keeneland Shop, Admissions, Programs, Track Maintenance, Guest Services and other areas.
Keeneland Hospitality provides food and beverage service for the entire Keeneland campus, including the Clubhouse, Grandstand, concessions and Track Kitchen and has opportunities for people with all levels of culinary, wait staff and host experience. Candidates, who may be seeking additional income and stable hours, will receive the opportunity to gain valuable culinary and dining experience while training directly under Executive Chef Marc Therrien.
The majority of positions offered during race meets are entry-level positions that do not require any formal training or education. These jobs can be a good fit for active people who are interested in a seasonal position that can lead to other opportunities, or for those that are just looking for a short-term opportunity to enjoy stable hours and earn additional income.
In addition, Keeneland is seeking applicants with knowledge of handicapping to become BETologists and advance its fan education efforts.
Team members who work the entire Spring Meet typically work 40 paid hours each week and will receive paid training prior to the start of the race meet. Seasonal employees are paid on a weekly basis and will receive 50 percent off meals in Grandstand concessions and a 30-percent discount on merchandise at The Keeneland Shop.
