Keeneland Sales Graduates, Led by Triple Crown Winner Justify, Capture Nine Graded Stakes over Belmont Weekend

June 12, 2018

Keeneland sales graduates took home the hardware over Belmont Weekend, winning nine graded stakes capped by Justify, who sold at the September Yearling Sale and became racing’s 13th Triple Crown winner with his victory in the Belmont Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) at Belmont on Saturday. Horses sold at Keeneland sales won five of the nine graded stakes at Belmont on Saturday: the aforementioned Justify; Bee Jersey (Runhappy Metropolitan-G1); Abel Tasman (Ogden Phipps-G1); Monomoy Girl (Acorn-G1) and Hoppertunity (Brooklyn Invitational-G2).

Justify crossed the finish 1¾ lengths in front of Gronkowski, who sold as a weanling at Keeneland’s 2015 November Breeding Stock Sale and was making his North American debut in the Belmont.

September Sale graduate Bee Jersey won the Runhappy Metropolitan by a nose over Grade 1 winner Mind Your Biscuits, sold as a short yearling at the 2014 January Horses of All Ages Sale. The Metropolitan marked the fourth consecutive win for Bee Jersey, who is undefeated this year.

September Sale graduate Abel Tasman cruised to a 7½-length victory in the Ogden Phipps to record her fifth Grade 1 win. She previously won the 2016 Starlet (G1) and the 2017 Kentucky Oaks (G1), Acorn (G1) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).

Monomoy Girl, from the same 2016 September Sale class as Justify, won a third consecutive Grade 1 stakes in the Acorn, having already accounted for the Central Bank Ashland (G1) at Keeneland and Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Veteran campaigner Hoppertunity overtook War Story in the stretch to win the Brooklyn Invitational and increase his career earnings to more than $4.6 million. Both Hoppertunity and War Story are September Sale graduates.

Other Keeneland-sold graded stakes winners at Belmont, Santa Anita and Woodbine this weekend included Honeymoon (G2) winner Paved; Bed o’ Roses Invitational (G3) winner Lewis Bay; Hendrie (G3) winner Code Warrior and Affirmed (G3) winner Draft Pick
